Job Overview

We are looking for an IT System Administrator on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) for their location in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The selected candidate will join our high-tech technical IT group to provide first and second level support to the end users and will work in the department’s HPC cluster Linux environment. 
Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe and not by ESA.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • 90 nodes CentOS 7 cluster for engineering simulations (separate cluster for GPU nodes);
  • Altair Access job scheduler and PBSworks workload manager;
  • IBM Spectrum scale in a multi-tiered storage setup;
  • High-performance local Infiniband 40 and 100 Gbit/s connectivity;
  • Maintenance and support of Dell EMC Isilon storage (see “Technology Skills”);
  • Provide on-site technical support;
  • Assist lab and facility users in system upgrades and maintenance, including but not limited to, add and/or remove memory, hard drives, network cards, … ;
  • Participate in data centre rack management activities;
  • Compliance to SLA on any IT Operations processes in an 8x5 operating environment;
  • Use of the available IT Service Management tools to accurately register each incident, request, problem, change, or asset record while ensuring accurate documentation is entered for each record;
  • Develop scripts to simplify and support IT operations;
  • Application of analytical skills to perform root cause analyses to apply a resolution and use defined escalation path when required;
  • Collaborate with team members on planning and executing IT infrastructure upgrade projects;
  • Maintain good supplier relationships and ensure compliance with licensing and support agreements;
  • Software and hardware asset lifecycle management following procedures;
  • Develop and maintain system documentation.


Master’s degree (in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Management Information Systems) and a minimum of 5 years of experience or a Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in relevant responsibilities;
More than 3 years of experience in IT Service Desk;
More than 3 years of experience in IT Infrastructure Operations with special technical expertise in VMware and HPC;
Experience with administration of IBM’s Spectrum Scale (aka GPFS);
Experience with maintenance of HPC nodes and networking hardware;
Experience with administration and maintenance of Linux High Performance Computing Clusters configurations and workload manager (PBSworks);
Experience with Web services and SQL Database Software stack maintenance;
Experience with coding and scripting: PHP, Python;
Experience with distributed version control and source code management tools: GIT, github or equivalents;
Strong background in Linux Server technologies (RedHat, CentOS);
Knowledgeable about HPC networking at the physical and configuration level (RoCe, 10 GbE, InfiniBand, etc.);
Strong understanding of network and storage fundamentals, including but not limited to firewalls, switching, DMZ, WAN, LAN (VLANS), VPN, iSCSI, Fibre Channel;
User support experience (graphical workstations hardware, OS, applications, accessories, lab IT infrastructure);
The following experience is considered a plus: Administration of Dell EMC Isilon (if no experience, training and certification will be provided); VMware cluster Operations with Vcenter and Vsphere; Active directory management; Backup Management with IBM Spectrum Protect and Dell EMC Data Domain; Dashboard configuration, e.g. Grafana, Power BI; Software licensing management; Lifecycle maintenance of asset inventory.
One or more industry certifications in the respective infrastructure technology area(s) are desired;
Proficiency in information security best practices and procedures;
ITIL v3 or V4 foundation working knowledge;
Project and time management skills;
Excellent communication and soft skills;
Customer oriented;
Ability and willingness to learn new technologies;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Ability to work effectively with team members and diverse cultural background user community;
Ability to function independently with very little supervision and navigate ambiguity;
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills;
Fluent in English (spoken and written) and other languages a plus.
